AggData Case Study

Easier access to retail locations data for Esri and AggData clients:

Problem: Real estate organizations with a Premium subscription to AggData (many of them Esri users) including such retailers as Starbucks, Target, and Petco use AggData for market planning and analysis. Currently, these organizations download a CSV file from AggData and geocode AggData’s layers if they wish to use them in ArcGIS or ArcGIS Online.  Additionally, the imported file is “static”, thus there is no way to automatically use the latest data without downloading a new CSV file and re-geocoding.

Solution: ArcGIS Online Integration. Beitz and Daigh Geographics created a solution that uploads and maintains AggData’s latest information to AGOL. This dataset is updated daily on so users always have access to the most current data. For example, if a user’s map has Whole Foods Market locations and there is an update that modifies some of the locations (e.g. new stores, changed locations, updated metadata, etc.), then the end-user will see these updates automatically with no further action required. And this works for both AGOL and ArcGIS Desktop. And if a user wishes to have a shp or gdb of the AggData layer(s), the user can simply navigate to the layer’s details page on AGOL and download a shp or gdb without any need to geocode or create points from an external csv file.

Implementation Details: Python and REST API. Scripting which reads data from the AggData database and then uses the AGOL REST API to upload the points to AGOL. This data encompasses nearly 4,000 layers in 35 countries (and counting) with data refreshed nightly

Integration will provide seamless updates to the latest data

Today from the ICSC Research Conference in Denver, CO – AggData is pleased to announce its plans to integrate with Esri ArcGIS Online (AGOL). What this means is that AggData Premium subscribers will soon be able to use Esri ArcGIS Desktop and Esri ArcGIS Online to directly import and map AggData retail location layers. The latest versions of the data will be automatically updated in the map view whenever the map is opened.

Available now, Esri AGOL users can test drive several free AggData layers from AGOL. Users just need to bring up a map on AGOL, click the add data button, and type in AggDataICSC. Esri ArcGIS Desktop users can do the same trial by clicking “Add Data from ArcGIS Online” and searching for AggDataICSC.

“Geography is one of the most natural, logical, and intuitive ways to connect business data with the context needed to make more profitable decisions.,” said Simon Thompson, director of commercial industry at Esri. “It provides new ways to discover, sort, and apply analytical data to business problems. Aggdata providing this information on the ArcGIS platform opens up the ability for organizations, no matter their size, to put data into context and make it work for anyone, everywhere.”

Many real estate companies and retailers such as Target and Petco are currently using the data from AggData to perform real estate analysis using GIS (Geographic Information Systems) from Esri. With over 3,000 layers in 35 countries, AggData has one of the largest retailer databases on the market today.

AggData layers enable real estate professionals to quickly get to the analysis portion of GIS projects without burdening an analyst to gather and format the retailer data first. For example, a shopping center owner can use AggData layers with Esri software to quickly compare a property to all the existing locations of a targeted retailer.

Beitz and Daigh Geographics, a Real Estate GIS professional services firm and Esri Partner, is helping with the connections to Esri ArcGIS Online. “We are excited to be working on this project for AggData. There are many uses for this data in the real estate and shopping center sectors. This seamless integration will give Esri users quick access to the latest available retailer layers. We plan to have all this up and running by the end of the year.” says David Z Beitz, President of Beitz and Daigh.

Top 5 Restaurant Super Chains

Top 5 Restaurant Super Chains: Where the elite are likely to eat.

By David Z Beitz, President and Co-Founder of Beitz and Daigh Geographics

AggData and Beitz and Daigh Geographics have teamed up to determine and analyze the restaurants that are most prevalent in our nation’s Super Zips.  Author and social historian Charles Murray first coined the term Super Zips in his analysis of the nation’s zip codes in relation to their percentile ranks in college education and in income. The zip code’s ranking is a number between 0 and 99 representing the average of its percentile ranks in college education and in income. Using 2013 income and population data from Esri, the 1,097 zip codes with rankings of 95 and higher are identified as Super Zips.

By taking AggData’s database of nationwide restaurants and overlaying them using GIS (Geographic Information System) on the Super Zips, this gives an interesting look into which restaurant chains have the highest penetration into this elite demographic. This study focuses on 294 restaurant chains with 50 or more locations in the United States and looks at the chains that have the highest % of inclusion in the Super Zips.

To see where your zip code ranks – check here: http://superzip.beitzanddaigh.com/

If you are a real estate developer or leasing professional doing business in areas with high income and education, keep an eye on these restaurants below.  One of these just might be your next deal:

Keep in mind that this analysis is done at the zip code level.  Zip codes can have large disparities in income and education levels based on specific locations within the zip code.

This Super Zips analysis of income and education could be performed at the block group level of geography to increase accuracy.   Also for a different way to view the data, this analysis can even be performed with drive times and custom trade areas around portfolios of stores and/or shopping centers.  By using this analysis, real estate professionals can learn more about their own properties or the properties of retailers that they are targeting for potential deals.

If your company has a need for location data and/or location analysis for research or marketing please contact either AggData or Beitz and Daigh Geographics today.

Representatives from both companies will be at this years 2014 ICSC RECon in Las Vegas to discuss the results of this study.  If you are interested in meeting during the show please contact either company to set up an apportionment.
