Predictive Location Analytics: The PetSmart acquisition of Petco

Data from AggData LLC // Analysis by Beitz and Daigh Geographics News recently broke that PetSmart is looking to acquire Petco, so we thought it would be interesting to look at these store portfolios and study the location analytics of this merger.  According to the latest data from AggData there are 1,440 PetSmart locations and 1,292 Petco locations (including 127 stores under the Unleashed by Petco brand). Using Esri Business Analyst Desktop GIS software we discovered that 62% of Petco locations are within a 10 minute drive time of a PetSmart. Drilling down even further we found that there are 223 Petco locations (17%) within 1 mile of an existing PetSmart, and 2 PetSmart locations contain 2 Petcos each within a 1 mile radius. We next focused our analysis on these 223 “overlap” locations at the 10 minute drive time trade area and noted some interesting findings by looking at the Market Potential Data from Esri. The Market Potential data showed that PetSmart has a much higher household market share that Petco does.  Looking at the overlap stores, only 4 of PetSmart’s trade areas report more customers shopping at Petco than PetSmart (2 of these stores are in Los Angeles and 2 are in Chicago), while the majority (219 stores) report more customers shopping at PetSmart than Petco.  The Market Potential data is provided in Esri Business Analyst desktop and the information originates from consumer surveys complied by GfK MRI. When retail chains merge, store closures often result.  Next, we looked at the population and income for all of the 10 minute trade areas for the overlap stores and...

Esri selects Beitz and Daigh Geographics for ArcGIS Online Specialty Designation

Columbia, South Carolina (June 16, 2015) – Beitz and Daigh Geographics, an Esri Silver Partner, was recently recognized by Esri as a new member of its “ArcGIS Online Specialty” designation. This designation is limited to Esri Partners who have demonstrated ingenuity, expertise, and proficiency in implementing Geographic Information System (GIS) solutions using ArcGIS Online, a collaborative, cloud-based platform and integral part of the ArcGIS system. Today there are 61 firms worldwide that have been accepted into this specialty designation. Beitz and Daigh Geographics currently provides several real estate and data provider solutions based on the ArcGIS Online platform. “ArcGIS Online is transforming the way organizations manage and share their spatial data with internal stakeholders and external customers,” said Esri president Jack Dangermond. “The ArcGIS Online Specialty allows us to recognize and collaborate with our partners that have embraced ArcGIS Online and are helping users succeed.” “We are excited to have this designation and look forward to helping clients implement solutions that take advantage of the ArcGIS Online platform.” said David Z Beitz, President of Beitz and Daigh Geographics. “Real Estate organizations in particular can greatly benefit from the ArcGIS Online ecosystem of data, analysis, and web-mapping. It’s exciting to see how our clients are finding new ways to use ArcGIS Online.” Earlier this year Beitz and Daigh Geographics completed an ArcGIS Online project for Seattle, Washington based data provider AggData LLC which uploads and maintains AggData’s latest information on ArcGIS Online and is updated daily so users always have access to the most current data. Python and REST services are used to read data from the AggData database, generate...

R.H. Ledbetter Properties, LLC Case Study

Ledbetter Properties creates new shopping center marketing materials with the help of GIS Problem: Ledbetter Properties needed to update the marketing materials for it’s shopping centers.  They had outdated competition aerials as well as site plans that were only image files. Solution: OnSite Pro™ –  Beitz and Daigh Geographics created new site plans in GIS as well as created new competition aerials using AggData and hybrid aerials by Bing.  Demographics were also updated on the property flyers and the website.  Moving forward, the tenant names only need to be changed in one place in the GIS database, and then the changes will be automatically reflected on the website and property flyers. Implementation Details: CAD software was used in the creation of the site plans and then the plans were converted to a geodatabase. Demographics are 2014 from Esri....

AggData Case Study

Easier access to retail locations data for Esri and AggData clients: Problem: Real estate organizations with a Premium subscription to AggData (many of them Esri users) including such retailers as Starbucks, Target, and Petco use AggData for market planning and analysis. Currently, these organizations download a CSV file from AggData and geocode AggData’s layers if they wish to use them in ArcGIS or ArcGIS Online.  Additionally, the imported file is “static”, thus there is no way to automatically use the latest data without downloading a new CSV file and re-geocoding. Solution: ArcGIS Online Integration. Beitz and Daigh Geographics created a solution that uploads and maintains AggData’s latest information to AGOL. This dataset is updated daily on so users always have access to the most current data. For example, if a user’s map has Whole Foods Market locations and there is an update that modifies some of the locations (e.g. new stores, changed locations, updated metadata, etc.), then the end-user will see these updates automatically with no further action required. And this works for both AGOL and ArcGIS Desktop. And if a user wishes to have a shp or gdb of the AggData layer(s), the user can simply navigate to the layer’s details page on AGOL and download a shp or gdb without any need to geocode or create points from an external csv file. Implementation Details: Python and REST API. Scripting which reads data from the AggData database and then uses the AGOL REST API to upload the points to AGOL. This data encompasses nearly 4,000 layers in 35 countries (and counting) with data refreshed nightly  ...
